Teaching English in Puglia

Once you have completed an online or onsite teaching certificate course with Teaching English in Italy consider teaching English in Italy during the school year, as a paying volunteer in the Puglia region (Southern Italy) with Global Volunteers. In this program you will have the opportunity to teach conversational English in middle and high school classrooms under the direction of Italian English teachers. Standard curriculum texts and established lesson plans are used, but opportunities to depart from formal lessons are also available. Volunteer teachers can serve as a resource on topics of culture, discussions on history, daily lifestyle, sports, and school systems. Some volunteers also teach songs and games, while others provide instruction on such things as letter writing. On a typical day, volunteers create their own lesson plans, engaging small groups of students in games and diverse interactive activities.

During the summer months, volunteers are also needed to work with high school students, and adult community members, to improve their conversational English skills in an informal education atmosphere.

For this program, we recommend signing up for the Onsite TESOL in Florence, the Online TESOL Certificate, the Online  TESOL 1 + TEYLTESOL 1 + TBE or any of the more indepth TESOL 2 + TEYL, TESOL 2 + TBE courses.

Working as a conversational English teacher along side Italian English teachers is also an excellent way to acquire more teaching experience with learners of English before or after completing an online or onsite Teaching Certificate through Teaching English in Italy.

Volunteers are generally people of all ages and from all walks of life who like working with young people. Typically they share common characteristics such as flexibility, compassion, a sense of adventure, and most importantly, the desire to work with and learn from local people in the host community. Volunteers are drawn from all occupations and backgrounds, and from throughout the world, mainly from the U.S., Canada and the U.K. Global Volunteers require no second language proficiency, previous international experience or professional expertise for participation.

Standard program two weeks. Shorter programs (one week) are available.

If departing from North America, you must depart at least one day prior to the arrival date.

Free time is available on evenings and weekends to enjoy the numerous nearby natural and cultural attractions in Puglia. The historic central districts of many towns make for fun walking tours. There are several important churches, flea markets, outdoor cafes, distinctive shops, and bakeries to visit. For day trips, many volunteers enjoy the Adriatic coastline or tour the Peninsula of Salento, including the baroque cities of Lecce, Otranto, and Santa Maria San Leuca.

“I'm very happy to have taken and completed this (online) course. You've been a great tutor. I'll keep in mind all the suggestions and comments you've made. I shall also rethink what topic(s) would be of better interest to the class that was being represented in the assignment. Thank you very much! ”
